Scripting the Opening Credits Scene

Our War of Hearts music video will have multiple sequences without music to emphasise some of the elements of the story. This is a common convention in alternative music, which has been done in music videos such as this one and this one.
The sequence we are scripting now is the audio for the opening sequence, which will play underneath the title card and will set the tone for the piece. It will also serve as a prelude to the later sequence, in which the argument escalates.

First Shoot - Opening

For our first scene, we decided to do an early morning shoot to capture the sun rising over a field. Here is our footage from that day:

What have we learnt from the research?

The entire purpose of researching the alternative music industry, artists and videos was to gain an insight into the forms and conventions used within them. The following is a list of conventions and/or ideas we will aim to adhere to or break with the music video:

  • Picking a certain colour scheme and running with it through the majority of the video
  • Using slow-motion and other visual effects, such as selective colour, as a device to enhance the narrative experience
  • Letterboxing certain parts of the video, and retracting the letterbox for visual and symbolic effect
  • Portraying a relevant issue to today's youth in order to evoke empathy from the audience
  • Taking an unorthodox approach to the presentation of the video (e.g. perhaps cutting out the music for a specific section to focus on an important scene or to cut to dialogue)

  • Not following through with the idea that the boy always has to get the girl at the end of the narrative or vice versa
  • Portraying an unhappy relationship
